Presencia de la Orden dominicana en Orihuela
Abstract
ABSTRACT: The arrival of the Dominicans in Orihuela has been the subject of numerous conjectures, but it can not be documentary proven before 1498. Their presence until the confiscation of religious orders decreed in 1836, undoubtedly contributed to the cultural and economic development of the city and region. The support received from its great patron the Oriolan Archbishop of Valencia Fernando de Loazes, allowed the convent have an annex school, which later became a University, abolished two centuries later. The Oriolan female branch began in 1564 as the Dominican Beaterio of Santa Lucia Brotherhood. The Dominicans were about to return to Orihuela during the last century, but the courses of events the Second Republic finally frustrated the new university project that so positive would have been for the episcopal town. Keywords: Dominicans, Fernando de Loazes, Convent, University, Beaterio, Second Republic.Downloads
