The aim of this paper is to examine the content and context of the Considerationi intorno alle risolutioni fatte dalla congregatione di Spagna circ’il Giappone, written by Francesco Ingoli, the secretary of the Sacra Congregatio de Propaganda Fide, in September 1628. This document served as preparatory material for a general meeting of the Congregation, in which Ingoli systematically responded to resolutions made by the Spanish Councils a few months earlier regarding the situation of the Japanese mission. Ingoli’s considerations, shaped amidst the activities of the Dominican missionary Diego Collado in Rome and Madrid, represent one of the earliest jurisdictional conflicts between the Congregation, established in 1622, and the Spanish and Portuguese patronages. The study is complemented by an annotated Spanish translation of the document.
