Nuevas noticias sobre el retablo de la Venerable Orden Tercera de Santo Domingo de Guzmán, en el real convento de San Pablo de Sevilla

Abstract

RESUMEN: Este trabajo de investigación aborda, utilizando fuentes documentales inéditas, el proceso constructivo y posterior historia material del retablo barroco que preside la antigua capilla de la Venerable Orden Tercera de Santo Domingo de Guzmán en el Real convento de San Pablo de Sevilla, actual parroquia de Santa María Magdalena. Su dispositivo arquitectónico en madera tallada y dorada, contratado por el maestro ensamblador Cristóbal de Guadix en 1707, ofrece un interesante programa iconográfico a través de un repertorio de esculturas cuya identificación y significado se proponen por vez primera, habiéndose visto transformado y al mismo tiempo enriquecido con la presencia, desde 1927, de las imágenes titulares de la cofradía penitencial del Calvario. ABSTRACT: This research, based on unpublished sources, addresses the process of construction and later material history of the baroque altarpiece which decorates the former Venerable Orden Tercera de Santo Domingo de Guzmán’s chapel in the Royal convent of San Pablo in Seville, nowadays known as Parroquia de Santa María Magdalena. The altarpiece’s architectonical device, wood carved and goldened, offers an interesting iconographic program through a repertory of sculptures which identification and meaning are proposed for the first time, for it was transformed and at the same time, enriched, by the presence, since 1927, of the titular sculptural images of la cofradía penitencial del Calvario.
